How do I run Rapid Spanning Tree with a single instance?

I need to run rapid spanning tree on a catalyst 6500 with a single instance across all vlans. How can this be done? My edge device does not support 802.1s.

Hi,

what about using MST (Multiple Spanning Tree)?

See http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/12_1e/swconfig/spantree.pdf for IOS and http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/123.pdf for CatOS.

Milan

Re: How do I run Rapid Spanning Tree with a single instance?

Whether your 6500 is running PVST+ or Rapid-PVST+ it will interoperate with devices that don't. The catalyst will detect 'legacy' 802.1d devices and switch down to 802.1d on the interface. I configured something similar where we had to extend some vlans from an old customer switch that didn't support 802.1q, so we just connected 5 different 100BaseT cross-over connections between a Cat3550 and a cabletron switch and configure the relevent access-vlans. When you view the STP status the 3550 shows 'STP peer' on the ports.
