How do I tunnel frame relay over ip?

I am trying to use the internet to connect an existing statmux network. The statmux supports frame relay as an output protocol on an RS232 interface.

Statmux--1720--Internet--3640--Statmux

The internet connection is via the ethernet port on DSL routers provided by the carrier.

Frame relay cannot be tunneled over IP, but IP can be tunneled over FR.

This is an unorthadox application, but this may be worth looking at:

Try looking up this link.

Both of your routers need to act as frame relay switches. I beleive that feature requires Enterprise Plus code on the router. I'm not sure if the 1720 will do this. I have done it on both 2500 and 2600 routers.

Good Luck;
