How IP PING times are averaged?

I hate to ask this, but I haven't been able to find an answer to completely explain the process to one of my Sys Admins.

When a PING is performed from a router, three times are received upon success, they are min/avg/max.

I had assumed that the min and max were added together and divided by 2 and you get the avg, but attempting to verify this on numerous pings this does not appear to be the case.

If someone has some documentation or could point me in the direction as to how these numbers are crunched, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

The average value is equal to the sum of the five values divided by five.

You can verify this using the "record" option of the extended ping command.
