How many Catalyst 2980/2948 switches can be connected with GBIC links?

Is there a limit to the number of 2980G and 2948G switches that can be "daisy chained"? We have a location that continues to grow and the solution to additional capacity has been to keep adding additional 2980G or 2948G switches. Currently, there are nine 2980 and 2948 switches connected via GBIC's.

I would prefer to move to the larger Catalyst 6509/6513 switches but need to provide documentation to senior management as to why we can't just keep adding more smaller switches as necessary. I can't find any help on CCO. Does anyone know of documentation regarding best practice guidelines in this situation?

Try and keep the SPT diameter under 7 hops. More details on this can be found in the document titled "Gigabit Campus Network Design".
