How many STP instances (Logical Ports) supported on ws-x4013, 4014, 4015

Hi,

looking for some info relating to a problem I have on some 4000/4500 series

switches running under several different SUP modules. We are connecting around

160 "Trunked" IP phones to each switch, after a period of time the BPDU utilization

reaches the 30-50% mark. Spanning tree is enabled so this is to be expected.

My question is how many STP instances will a 4013(SUP II)to 4015 (SUP IV) card support?

If I use the documented suggested formula

: "The sum of all logical ports, as calculated with the formula above, should be less than or equal to

the following:

– 600 instances in PVST+ mode for the Catalyst 4000 series Supervisor Engine I and II

– 480 instances in PVRST mode for the Catalyst 4000 series Supervisor Engine I and II"

My instances are in the 3000 - 4000 mark - this can't be correct can it?

Hi Friend,

WHY don't you configure the ports on which ip phones are connected as spanning-tree port fast.

I know now your question will be it is a trunk port so how can you configure port fast on trunk port and for that my answer will be instead of configuring the port as trunk port you can simple configure that port with auxillary vlan which is for ip phones.

Check this link as how to cofnigure aux vlan

HTH, if yes please rate the post.

Hi Ankur,

I appreciate your reply but in this instance with the Avaya IP Phone models

and IP-PBX configuration the AUX vlan is not an option. I can get around this problem.

It’s the fact that I've come across it time and again and I'm just curious about the

STP instance limitation on the 4000 series SUP cards

I wanted to throw this question "out to the floor" before I delve into the PDFs :-)

Avaya ip phones do work with voice/aux vlan.. I have about 10k avaya ip phones working in this manner on my cisco network.

example:

interface FastEthernet0/2

description avaya ip phone

switchport access vlan 2

switchport voice vlan 33

mls qos vlan-based

no cdp enable

spanning-tree portfast

or

set port auxiliaryvlan 1/2 33

more information in this avaya guide..
