How to choose the tunnel mode of a tunnel interface?

Hi All,

Can any body tell me how to choose the tunnel mode of the tunnel interface? There is any mode: GRE,IPIP... What's the difference between them? I am confused so that I used "tunnel mode ipip" everytime I config tunnel. But I think I should really understand that. Can any one give me idea? Thank You!

Best Regards

Re: How to choose the tunnel mode of a tunnel interface?

GRE (GenericRouteEncapsulation) and IPIP (IP in IP) are protocols that you use to establish the tunnel. No need to say that it the settings must match on both ends of the tunnel. The choice for a specific protocol may vary, depending on the properties of the network between the tunnel endpoints.

There is a fairly explicit description in the chapter about Configuring Logical Interfaces in the IOS configuration guide of your current release.

Regards,

Leo
