How to find out Router Serial Number by IOS Commands

Hi there,

I am in need of serial numbers for all my cisco network devices. When I telneting to the switches and entering show version command I am getting the serial number where as the same when I am entering in the routers I didn't get it. I have so many remote routes where I have telnet access only.

Is there any way to get the same I mean through ciscoworks software or any other tools.

Physical serial no label is there but I wanted to find with IOS commands.

Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Regards

Re: How to find out Router Serial Number by IOS Commands

Hello,

to my best knowledge there is no IOS command available to get the serial numbers of routers. This question comes up quite often, and unfortunately there seems to be no other way than physically reading it off the router, unlike switches, which show the serial numbers when the ´show version´ command is used.

I think there is no IOS command that gives you the serial number. You have to set it via SNMP command (chassis-id) if you want to use it for administration.

The only router that I know of that ever gave you a s/n with a "show version" was the 1600 series. Even then it may have only been the early verions of the router. Other than that, you'll have to get it off the chassis itself.

12.3(4)T introduced support for Cisco Unique Device Identifier, which will allow you to view the serial number through the CLI or SNMP. You can find more info here:

That's a cool new feature. The docs state the Cisco product must be UDI-enabled. Couldn't find any list of devices that are UDI-enabled though.

In the newer codes at least in the 7500 series you can use the sh rsp chassis-info command and this gives the chasis serial number or the show diag on some of the smaller boxes . Think it has to be at least 12.2 code or higher though .

Depending on the type of router you have, you may able to get it. Example: the 7200 series has a command called show c7200 which will give you the info. look for a show command that relates to the chassis or model number of the router under the show commands.
