Re: how to tell which type of router/switch ? from show version

From above this is a Cisco 7500 Series with an RSP4:

cisco RSP4 (R5000) processor with 262144K/2072K bytes of memory.

The device has the following interfaces:

1 GEIP controller (1 GigabitEthernet).

1 FEIP2 controller (2 FastEthernet).

1 VIP2 R5K controller (2 Serial)(1 POS).

2 FastEthernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

1 Gigabit Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

2 Serial network interface(s)

1 Packet over SONET network interface(s)

There are various other commands you can use like sh diag etc but these are platform dependant.

Re: how to tell which type of router/switch ? from show version

If you look at the IOS image name you can determine the platform from the table at:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/432/platform.html

in your case you are running IOS (tm) RSP Software (RSP-ISV-M), Version 12.1(8b)E7, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

so this is an RSP (RSP-ISV-M) which indicated you have a 7500 series router.

Also theres a good White Paper on IOS naming on CCO:
