I would like to automate an upcoming installation by having both IOS and
configuration downloaded from a tftp server every time the routers boot.
I would like to avoid having to enter any configuration or new IOS in the
routers before shipping them to the installation sites, if possible.
Downloading config to a router without startup config is no problem.
Downloading IOS is no problem if the routers have the boot system tftp
command in tha startup config.
But when I try to download both IOS and config, I can't get it to work. I boot the
router and it loads network-confg and hostname-confg ok. But then it thinks
that it has finished with the boot sequence and doesn't boot IOS from tftp
even though I have boot system tftp in the config that is downloaded.
Anyone have this working?
The tftp server is reached via a serial interface (WIC-2T).
The router at the other side of the serial line has ip helper pointing to
the tftp server. I have also tried adding the IP number of the tftp server in
the boot system tftp command in the downloaded config files.
The ideal solution would be to load IOS and config, in whatever order it
is easiest to do it, and then load config again to be able to use IOS commands
that doesn't work in IP IOS. E.g. IPX or AT commands.
Thanks!

It seems that you have to change config register. The last digit has to be 1 in order for router to load image thru tftp. If it's 0x2102, change it to 0x2101.

No, I checked that and 2 through F should be network boot. 1 is bootrom if
I remember right.

You are absolutely right. I was thinking of booting to bootrom. Sorry about that. Please ignore my reply.
