HSRP state changes.

We have 6509 hybrid switches/MSFC's running in our core with HSRP vlan interfaces. Occasionally we get an HP Open view alert to say that a switch is experiencing HSRP state changes. Cisco.com is not massively forthcoming on potential causation. Whilst there is no service disruption - it is after all HSRP - does anyone have any experience of this phenomena ? I think that the failure to see 3 x successive HSRP hellos is enough to trigger a state change - could it be user traffic causing it ? Or what ... ? TIA Peter@it-123.co.uk

Re: HSRP state changes.

Unless the connecting links are almost saturated it shouldn't miss the hellos , if it is an actual state change it is temporarily disrupting traffic while it changes over . Do the logs in the 6509 say you are getting state changes ? If yes start checking the conecting links on both sides of the links for things like errors or speed /duplex mismatches . In a properly operating environment you should not see a state change unless one of your links fails or has problems . If it is actually changing state from active to the standby router this is disruptive for like 15-20 seconds depending on the hsrp timers...
