Hi
We have 2 routers with HSRP configured betweent them and HSRP was working fine but from last few weeks interfaces on router2 which is usually in standby state becomes active for 15-20secs and goes back to standby state. Its only happening once or twice a day.
Can someone tell me why router2 is changing the HSRP states.
Thanks

Do you have any errors on the interfaces that would indicate a loss of the HSRP keep-alive?
Have you set HSRP priorities and preempt commands?
Mike.

Hi Mike,
Yes I have setup the priority and preempt commands. The router's interface which I want to be active priority is 150 and in standby I am not using priority command.
ie.
router1
standby 20 priority 150 preempt
and
router2
standby 20 preempt
Thanks

Is there any problem with the switchport connecting to the router 1 ? in this case, if there are drops, it might go to the second router and come back immediately once it is stable. Try reducing the hello timer to 10 secs (or to any low value) and see if this happens again.
do a "debug standby packets" and see what exactly is the error message you are getting.
