HSRP with Secondary Interface Addresses

Hi All,

I am adding a second router for redundancy. When configuring HSRP for an interface with primary and secondary ip addresses do I need to configure a seperate HSRP group for each. For example:

r1

int e0

ip address 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.0

ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 secondary

standby 10 ip 10.0.0.1

standby 10 priority 110

standby 10 preempt

standby 192 ip 192.168.1.1

standby 192 priority 110

standby 192 preempt

r2

int e0

ip address 10.0.0.3 255.255.255.0

ip address 192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0 secondary

standby 10 ip 10.0.0.1

standby 10 priority 100

standby 10 preempt

standby 192 ip 192.168.1.1

standby 192 priority 100

standby 192 preempt

or do I use

standby 10 ip 192.168.1.1 secondary

instead.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Re: HSRP with Secondary Interface Addresses

The way you have configured it, with multiple standby groups, is correct. See the following URL for an example -

Re: HSRP with Secondary Interface Addresses

No, you don't need to use another standby group for the secondary HSRP address. You could also do it like:

standby ip 10.0.01

standby ip 192.168.1.1 secondary
