when using hsrp, does it load balance between the routers or does it only use the one router and the other is not used until one goes off ? and also does it need to be setup on both sides of your wan to be effective ?

Hi Carl,

When we configure HSRP it doesnot load-balance automatically between the routers. It uses one as an active and other as standby and the standby takes up the job if active goes off. However, you can configure HSRP to do the load-balancing by creating multiple HSRP groups for diff subnets and making few groups active on one router and standby for others and vice-versa.

We donot set up HSRP on WAN side, we set it up on LAN side of the routers connected to WAN.

Please see the link below for more info:

Hi Carl

If you need loadbalancing, i recomend you GLBP (Gateway Loadbalancing Protocol). It does provied fault tolerance as HSRP but it uses all availlable gatways for traffic forwarding without the need to configure multiple Groups and different Gateways at the client side. Mabe you should give it a look. If one of the gatways fails, the remaining takes over his duty. I use it since some time, and it works stable.
