It first depends on your routing table. If the address of the 1603 is in the 5300 routing table pointing to an async interface, then an async call will be made (in which case the 1603 should have "isdn incoming-voice modem" configured, along with an async interface). If the 1603 address is pointing to a sync/ISDN interface on the 5300, then a sync call will be made. If the 1603 address is pointing to a dialer interface on the 5300, and that dialer interface is associated with a sync AND async interface, then it's random as to which will be used for dialout. Obviously this last case is not recommended; async and sync interfaces should have their own dialer interfaces.
