hi,
i have a Cisco 1760 with 12.2(2)XK2. leased line on serial0 and a backup configuration from async interface. modem is attached to aux port. this router is connected to the central office previously, but now it can not connect any more. the answers to sh int async 5 and sh dialer are as follows when the configuration of interface se 0 is including "backup interface async 5" command:
TORBALI#sh int async 5
Async5 is standby mode, line protocol is down
Hardware is Async Serial
Internet address is 10.10.20.2/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 115 Kbit, DLY 100000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation PPP, loopback not set
DTR is pulsed for 5 seconds on reset
LCP Closed
Closed: BRIDGECP, IPCP, CCP, CDPCP, LLC2, BACP, IPV6CP
Last input never, output 6w6d, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters 00:15:36

TORBALI#
TORBALI#sh dialer

Wait for carrier (30 secs), Re-enable (15 secs)
Dialer state is shutdown

TORBALI#
it must say dialer state is idle. am i wrong?
i can't clear the async interface. when i shut this port any log information isn't created by router which says the port is administratively down. and i can't see any shutdown row in the running configuration. i tried to delete async interface by no int command but again after deleting i got the same answer to sh dialer command.
debugging logs are as follows when dialing:

i haven't reloaded the router yet. is there a way to make this router to dial back up with this async interface?
thanks.

If the async interface is in standby mode, this means that the primary interface (serial 0 in your case) should still have the line protocol up, in which case dialing will not be successful. With the "backup" command, the primary interface has to be line protocol down before dialing can successfully occur.
It looks like there may be a problem with the remote modem answering, too:
6w6d: CHAT5: Sending string: atdt\T<4463066>
6w6d: CHAT5: Expecting string: CONNECT
6w6d: CHAT5: Timeout expecting: CONNECT
You might try adding or increasing the TIMEOUT while waiting for the CONNECT message; it should be at least 60 seconds. Note that when troubleshooting, it is often times useful to have msec timestamps for the debug. Configure:
serv time de da ms
serv time lo da ms
