IEEE 802.1q Tunneling Core Switch Requirments

Greetings,

I'm looking at 802.1q Tunneling documents for the 6500. I have a few questions:

1) All of the command references are for IOS. Does that imply hybrid configuration is not supported when doing 802.1q Tunneling?

2) Does the customer switch need to be a 3550 or just any switch that can support the "vlan dot1q tag native" command?

3) Does 802.1q tunneling need to be supported across the entire core network or only on the switches with the customer facing dot1qtunnel interface configured.

1) dot1q tunneling are indeed supported in CatOS.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800c65a7.html

2) It does not need to be a 3550. On the 6500 the "set dot1q-all-tagged enable" command as the same effect.

3) On the customer facing switch is sufficient.

Hope this helps,

.

1) Thanks very much for the link!!

2) Assuming we don't have a 6500, would a 3550 suffice as the 802.1q service provider tunnel edge switch?

3) Perfect, so we can have whatever we want in between, as long as the tunnel edge devices support the dot1q tunnel interface command?

1) You're welcome

2) It sure would.

3) The only requirement for the switches in the middle (not customer facing) is support for baby giants caused by the additional dot1q label.

Hope this helps,
