I want to implement vlans so as the users m/cs are not binded to ports , i.e ports should get assigned to vlans as per the mac address.
H/w i have got is
3550xl switches and 2950g 24 switches.
is it possible with the existing h/w ?? if yes then how ??
Please advice.

You can configure VMPS but neither the 3550 nor the 2950 support VMPS server feature. The following pages should help

Thanks
this information i got while searchig the vlan configs , which says u can use a 5000 switch as vmps server which will get the mac-vlan table from a tftp server.therefor with my current setup i can not configure vmps.
Please tell me why the commands in config mode
mac-address static vlan port exists and
in which scenerio it is used ?

this command will add the static mac address to the point to some port to some particular vlan. Usually it uses for the multicast entries or also in some case where you are some problems where the mac address is aging out quickly or some weird networks problems with application , at that time static mac addresses are added which will never age out until the switch resets..
vmps server can be configured on cat6k, 5k, 4k at this point.,
