Inter Vlan Routing

I have Cisco's 2600 Series Router and 2 L3 3550 Series switch with 24 ports each. Around 12 VLANS are to be created and in couple of VLANS heavy traffics like video/media streaming will be taking place. Now, confused whether to use 2600 Router or the L3 switch for inter-vlan routings. Can any one suggest me… or can give me a better solutions.

Hi,

If it's sheer forwarding performance that you are after, the 3550s are superior to the 2600 series routers.

However, if you are going to require some Layer 3 features that are not available on the 3550s, then you may not have much choice but to go for a specialised routing platform.

I was also thinking of using L3 switches for inter Vlan routing. Is there any basic common feature which is not supported by L3 switch when compared to 2600 Routers.

And in my design i have allocated a seperate Vlan and an IP Range for VOIP(for future use). Does 3550 supports voice???

Hi Rajesh,

The 3550s do most IP stuff.. I was just enquiring whether you had some exotic requirements at all. One feature that I know is not supported is IPv6. But that's probably not an issue for you :-)

The 3550s do support voice features...

If your 3550 does not support inline power, you will need to get a daugther card to support inline power for voice support. Note that 3550 supports only prestandard cisco inline power. to get 802.3af you need to upgrade to 3560 or 3750.
