Interface issue

Hi

COuld someone please explaing the following to me and how I can fix it?

When doing a "show interface" on my pix firewall (515e) I get:

interface ethernet0 "outside" is down, line protocol is up

Would a reboot fix it?

Thanks

Dan

Re: Interface issue

The outside interface may be administratively down. (new installation?)

When there is an active link connected you get this weird message. Use the command "interface ethernet0 auto" to bring it administratively up.

Re: Interface issue

Hi,

Other than being administrativly down im not sure how this is possible. Line proto is up so carrier must be available and nor is it shutdown.

Could you post output of show interface ethernet0?

You could try config t > interface ethernet0 shutdown then interface ethernet0 auto to bring it backup.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

sh interface ethernet0

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier

input queue (curr/max blocks): hardware (128/128) software (0/8)

output queue (curr/max blocks): hardware (0/2) software (0/1)

Currently this pix (primary) is not active as the standby has become active.

I might need to this out of hours if there's a risk of network downtime. Is there a risk with this?

Thanks

Re: Interface issue

This should be ok if the standby has taken over. Perhaps that is why the outside interface is showing this state.

Re: Interface issue

Try giving no shut on the interface. if the cable is plugged in incorrectly it keeps the line protocol down.
