interface range problem

I am trying to use the interface range command on a 4500 switch and it is refusing to take it. I would able to use the command just a couple months ago but I dont remember what I exactly typed in.

I tried typing:

interface range gig 5/1 - 48,gig 6/1 - 48,gig 7/1 - 48

I even tried to use ? to help guide me but nothing will work. Any suggestions?

Hi Friend,

It should work. Can you run that command again and paste the output with error message. I mean where it shows you carrot sign notifying wrong input?

I actually did not run the commands myself unfortuneately but I believe my director also ran the command with a space between the port and the hyphen, which I instructed him to do.

Are you sure that module 3,5 are gigabit modules? Can you paste the output of "sh mod"?

Yes I have just looked directly on the modules to be sure that they are indeed gig.

And yes I also put the spaces between the ports as I showed in my original message.

You need to have a space between the number and the dash between the numbers

int range g3/1 - 48,g4/1 - 48 etc.... Also make sure it is a gig module and not just a 10/100 module . Do show int status to determine what is installed.

Hi Glen,

The carrot sign when he gets an error message is not on dash sign but on gig sign so this makes me believe he is entering a wrong interface type, not sure though. Also in his original post he has entered the spaces.

Yes they are definately gig

This works on our 4506 and we have a gig module which is a 16 port module or I would try to recreate the entire command.

int range fa4/45 - 48, gi5/3 - 7, gi5/11 - 13

That's very odd.

Do you think the problem could be the fact that I used "gig" instead of "gi". I mean it really shouldn't because all it is is an abbreviation. And I know it's not a new feature.

Try not using the abreviation as you start to type fas or gig just hit the tab key and it will finish the word then you put the actual interface slot/port after that .

From looking at the different attempts that we tried I see we used

interface range Gigabitethernet mod/port, gig mod/port...

but it still gave us the carrot under the G in "Gigabitethernet".

Please post a "show mod" or a "show interface status " . If the cards are actually gig i have never heard or seen of the int range command being a problem .

I can post it if you want but I have verified that they are gig blades from directly looking at them.

Still think it is a syntax problem , use this int range gigabitethernet 5/1 - 48 . Enter . there has to be a space between the 1 and the dash and between the dash and the 48 . If that doesn't work try again without the space in there some of the newer codes do not need the space as cisco has changed this , it has to be one or the other . If neither works then you will have to open a TAC case to have them look at this . Have never seen a problem like this on any IOS switch .
