Interfacing Cisco GBIC to another vendor GBIC

I have a Catalyst 3508 -8 port Gigabit fiber box that I use to facilitate backbone to several 3548 boxes at access layer for a small customer.

I have a need to effect a connection from one of the unused GBIC ports on my 3508 box to a GBIC port on an older Cabletron SSR2000 (temporary solution till customer upgrades to a Cisco box to replace the old Cabletron SSR). Will this work?.. I know both can run IEEE spanning-tree; I am curious as to if there would be any proprietary issues on either side that would prohibit this connection from working?...

As long as the GBIC type is the same, it should work. If you have problems with link coming up, disable auto-negotiation
