IOS or CATIOS?

Hello all,

I have a question about IOS used in catlist 3550 and 4000:

From http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat4000/rel6_3/config/qos.htm,

I only see the configuration about WRR. There is no CAR/Shaping, WRED, Cos-DSCP-IPPrecedence map etc.

But from http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/1214ea1/3550scg/swqos.htm,

I can see a whole set of QoS feature.

And, how about the cat 2948G-L3, it uses IOS 12.0 but also has a limited feature set. Also, Cat5000 uses release 6.3 which looks much powerful than the rel6.3 used in cat4000. Is there a big difference between cat4900 and cat5000 from the software point of view?

(sorry, i'm a little confused:

==========IOS12.0/12.1=======CAT Rel6.3

2948G-L3--smallQoS------------------

3650-12T------WholeQOS--------------

4000------------------------smallQoS

4908GL3---smallQoS------------------

5000------------------------WholeQoS

Which point am I missing here?)

Thanks again for your suggestion,

-CZ

we are comparing lot of different box here.

cat4k/5k runs CAT OS like 5.x, 6.x software.

The information below is for current sup/CAT OS, the information may change in the future.

cat4k does only honour the incoming QoS if it is already tagged or tag the un-tagged packets by system wide difined COS. It does not do any input scheduling and but output scheduling is performed based on COS

Cat5k does the above and also can do more layer 3 Qos and input/output scheduling on certain line cards

cat6k does the "whole qos", classfication, policing, marking.

now 2948g-l3 and 4908g-l3 are layer 3 boxes and they share common qos features

3550-12T is our new switch and it also does various qos features.

So to summarize

cat6k is the best, next the cat5k and the cat4k for qos point of view. Cat4k qos features may change with introduction of new software/hardware in the near future.

3550-12T is probably > 2948g-l3 qos

hope this clears things out for you little bit. The best way to learn about it is the product documentation.
