IOS update/VLANs

I recently upgraded my IOS to 12.0(27). I have a Cisco 2610 router with one 10base/t. In order to deploy VLANs you are supposed to have a Fast Ethernet. But, on Cisco's website I read that 2610's are capable of VLANs using dot1q encapsulation. If anyone could give me some information on it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
