IOS Upgrade 7206 VXR

I am planning to upgrade the IOS on a 7206VXR(npe-400). Is it necessary to upgrade the boot image on bootflash? I read the following on cisco's website-"Unless you installed new port adapters in the router shelf, do not upgrade the boot image." Does this mean that I should keep the same boot image on the router even though it is not the same version as the new image I will be putting on disk0? When is it necessary to upgrade the boot image and in which order should you upgrade, boot image first and then disk0 or vice versa?

Current boot statements on the router:

boot-start-marker

boot system flash disk0:c7200-js-mz.123-9a.bin

boot bootldr bootflash:c7200-kboot-mz.123-9a.bin

boot-end-marker

Re: IOS Upgrade 7206 VXR

Upgrading the boot image to the same level as the IOS image is not an absolute requirement. It is recommended by TAC to ensure that you won't run into a case where newer boot image is required and then you start having issue.

Both the boot image and disk0: could be upgraded at once.

Hope this helps,

Re: IOS Upgrade 7206 VXR

So then I guess my question is if it is recommended by TAC then why does it say "Unless you installed new port adapters in the router shelf, do not upgrade the boot image"?. I'm a little confused by that.
