Hi,

A couple of questions.

Is there a way of resetting a 3500XL switch to 'out of the box' settings? I have one that has gone belly up and will not boot!!

Also, I have a 3550 switch as my command switch in a cluster. I recently purcahsed a couple of new 48 port 3550 switches and although they are part of the cluster the Cluster Management Suite does not recognise them!! Any ideas why?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

the best way to reset 3500XL to factory default config I know is:

Go to enable mode

sh flash to check there is a correct IOS file

sh boot to check BOOT path-list and Config file variables are correct

write erase - this will clear startup config

delete vlan.dat - this will remove all VLAN definitions

reboot the switch.

But if your switch doesn't boot at all it remains in ROM mode probably and you need either load it from network or via Xmodem - see configuration manual for details.

To your cluster problem:

"they are part of the cluster" does it mean that you see them on the list when you issue sh cluster member on the command switch?

Do the member switches use individual IP addresses?

Are there any ip http access-class commands in configs?

Is management VLAN the same on the command and member switches?

Regards,

Milan

Thanks for the info on the switch, I will try reloading from Xmodem as you suggest.

The cluster problem is this:

I can 'see' the two new switches in CMS as part of the cluster. I just can not see any port or switch info! I have been able to rename the switches so I obviously have access to them. If I click on properties there is an error which states that the command IP address is invalid.

Only the command switch is assigned an IP address.

I shall take a look at the config files and see what I can find in there.

Robin.

The following page should help in resetting your switch to factory defaults

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/156.html

But if your switch is not booting up, try and recover it using the following steps

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/corrupt_or_missing_image.html

Thanks for the links.

I will try these. I think there may be a bigger problem though!!

The switch boots to a Switch: prompt. If I enter the boot command a message shows saying that it can not boot the image files due to no permissions!!
