There are so many different versions of IOS. How do I know which one to use? Do I just use the newest one?

the newest is the best sure, but you should consider other things like : protocol (ip, ipx, sna,...) and features (NAT, DHCP, Voice, Firewall,..;)

Hmmm

I would only use the latest if I had security need or a customer need ( as in new WIC's blades NM's )etc Otherwise I prefer to be just I ver behind.. Like now I am at 12.1 and 12.0

As 12.2 is still all ED and LD at least all 12.0 is all GD so it really stable

http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/417/109.html this shows what ED GD etc is.

Here is a matrix tool that will help you out also.

Don't forget some of the older routers may not be supported in the latest and greates also..

The newest IOS may not necessarily is the best one in your network environment. There are several factors that one need to look at before selecting the right IOS version, features, hardware, protocols etc. Here are some good URL that you can use a starting point which will help you understand IOS and how to select it better:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/620/1.html

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/130/choosing_ios.shtml. You can also use CCO Feature Navigator to find out the features present in the IOS: http://www.cisco.com/go/fn. There are some good books by Cisco Press on IOS which you may also want to look at: http://www.ciscopress.com. 'Cisco IOS Releases: The Complete Reference' is one such book which is an excellent resource for such topic.

Depends on your needs i mean what configuration u going to make as all IOS dont possess all features as...in general IP IOS u wont find the encapsulation feature for that u need a IP Plus or a enterprise version of IOS soPlease ensure that the features u need are present on the IOS u going to u use.

If i m wrong somehere pls do correct me !!

cheers!!
