IP CEF, Should it normally be enabled?

In the last year or so I have had several situations where I was getting high CPU utilization on a router and the fix was to simply enable IP CEF on the router. Should IP CEF normally be used on a router or are there any drawbacks to running it? I am considering enabling it on several other routers that are not currently experiencing any problems just as a preventative measure, what do you think? Is this a good idea?

Re: IP CEF, Should it normally be enabled?

Hello,

I would say in general CEF is the best switching path option, since it relieves the processor. Not sure if you have a CCO login, but if you do, check the following document about the benefits and restrictions of CEF (this document is bsed on IOS version 12.2):

Run CEF everywhere you can. Process based switching is much worse on the router if there is any real traffic load.
