The only way to protect yourself from problems like these is proper IP management. If you are using DHCP to privde your users with IP addresses, you should be able to reserve part of the DHCP scope for Network Devices. I generally use the following guidelines:
Addresses 1-10 on any class C or smaller network are reserved for Network Use.
Networks larger than class C, I reserve the first 10 addresses of each class C break.
