IP routing accross WAN link problem

I have just changed the subnet on a remote site and I can't get windows 95 machines to ping past the router. From the Server at the site (which is Netware 5.1) I can ping past the router to the main network, I can also ping past the router to the main network on Windows 2000 workstations. The spooky thing is I can't ping out to the main network from the router at the remote site but I can ping the server on the same site and also the router can ping itself. Is Win 95 more susceptable to mistakes in the routing table or does the fact that everything else can get passed the router mean the table must be OK. I am new to routing and I'm not one hundred percent sure I have got the routing table right. I have two networks both class C with a router at each end.

A couple of questions. It sounds as if all machines, rather win2k or win95 are all on your new subnet? If so, are the IPs of the hosts statically entered or do you have a DHCP server? If DHCP, and you have configured the server to issue addresses from the new range, I believe that you can just reboot the win95 machines or type in 'winipcfg' from a DOS prompt. This causes the machine to release it's IP and gateway and request new assignments.

Also, at your main router at the remote site, did you enter a static route back to the new subnet.

If I have misunderstood your problem entirely, just keep in mind that the routing table knows nothing about the operating system on the hosts, and hosts know next to nothing about the routing table. So Win95 should not be any more or less suseptible to routing table issues, but may interact differently with things like DHCP servers, etc.

If one workstation is having problems, its usually a problem with the subnet mask or default gateway on the workstation. From the dos prompt, route print will show the routing table of a win 95 machine.

also winipcfg will show mac address, ip address, mask, default gw.

I think that route print will work on win2k, but the winipcfg is replaced by ipconfig on win 2k.

If everything looks ok, posting the routing table of the pc and the router would be helpful, as well as a router config.

The network is using DHCP and is handing out addresses and the correct mask OK to all clients, this problem is effecting all Win95 and not just one and although W2k works it is very slow. I did the route print as you said and the result is below as is the routing table.

The main network is 195.102.107.0

The router at this end is 195.102.107.10

The remote network is 195.102.106.0

The router at this end is 195.102.106.65

You are missing a default gateway.

The route print for my win 98 looks like:

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 149.128.198.254 149.128.198.173 1

Plus Host, plus broadcast, plus network, plus loopback, plus multicast

Sounds like something is able to proxy arp for the 2000 machines.

The solution is to configure DHCP to send a default gateway.

Hi,

I find yr network very simple and easy to trouble shoot.But the problem u mentioned need more input to come to a conclusion.Please once again check the tcp/ip conf's in that win95 machine.And also do check the ethernet encapsulation in each routers.But if it was problem with encapsulation win2000 machines would not have also worked.As things stand,I doubt the configuration of that win95 machine.
