IPX MLS

I am trying to disable mls IPX on a switch. The config file reads" set mls ipx enable" How do I disable it? Is it enabled by default?

Re: IPX MLS

I dont think you can disable it on the Supervisor side. There was a development bug filed to remove this line from Non-default configuration. Try upgrading to latest GD 5.5(16) and you should not see it. I tried the following in the lab MSFC here

Router#sh mls status

MLS global configuration status:

global mls ip: enabled

global mls ipx: enabled <<<<<------------

global mls ip multicast: disabled

current ip flowmask for unicast: destination only

current ipx flowmask for unicast: destination only

Router#conf terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#no mls ipx

Router(config)#end

Router#

08:24:49: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by vty0 (127.0.0.11)

Router#sh mls status

MLS global configuration status:

global mls ip: enabled

global mls ipx: disabled<<<<<------------

global mls ip multicast: disabled

current ip flowmask for unicast: destination only

current ipx flowmask for unicast: destination only

Re: IPX MLS

Dont worry about the above output. Once you disabled IPX MLS on the MSFC you have disabled it. If you observer the above output, you do not see a MAC address for the router. With IPX mls is enabled, here is what you would see

cs-c6009-22a> (enable) sh mls ipx

IPX Multilayer switching aging time = 256 seconds

IPX flow mask is Destination flow

IPX max hop is 255

Active IPX MLS entries = 0

IPX MSFC ID Module XTAG MAC Vlans

--------------- ------ ---- ----------------- ----------------

Re: IPX MLS

What switch is it? If it's an CAT6000 with an MSFC in it, you'll need to do the following on the MSFC

MSFC15(config)#no mls ipx

BTW why do you want to disable MLS?

Re: IPX MLS

It's not that I want to disable MLS IP only IPX since we are no longer running that protocol.

Thank you for you help!

Re: IPX MLS

This did not solve my problem.

Re: IPX MLS

On the catalyst switch, did you enter "set mls disable ipx"

eg.

Console> (enable) set mls disable ipx

IPX Multilayer switching is disabled

Console> (enable)

Re: IPX MLS

I entered the information you gave me and this is what I got:

bldg3-c6500-1> (enable) set mls disable ipx

Unknown command "set mls disable". Use 'set mls help' for more info.

bldg3-c6500-1> (enable) set mls help

Set mls commands:

It does not seem to be working. I am using Cat OS Sw : 5.5(4b)

Re: IPX MLS

According to this link Catalyst 6000 family supervisor engine software version 5.2(1) CSX or later supports IPX MLS:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/55.html

The CSX leads me to believe you can't enable ipx mls on your switch.

This is what I was refering to in my last post:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat5000/rel_5_2/layer3/ipx_mls.htm#xtocid2828740

If you do a show mls ipx on your switch does it show it's enabled? How about any candidate packets?

If no, I don't think it's enabled.

Re: IPX MLS

Steve,

This is the info from the switch with a show mls:

bldg3-c6500-1> (enable) sh mls ipx

IPX Multilayer switching aging time = 256 seconds

IPX flow mask is Destination flow

IPX max hop is 255

Active IPX MLS entries = 0

IPX MSFC ID Module XTAG MAC Vlans

--------------- ------ ---- ----------------- ----------------

192.168.8.252 15 1 - -

bldg3-c6500-1> (enable)

I would like to disable this.
