If unknown on the switch, is there a sh or deb command on the router to detect the encapsulation type of the switch ?

NO there is no command or debug to help you with this.

IOS 11.2 do auto sensing for the three lmi flavours

and when one is detect on the swicth it is used locally on router

and you can verify by doing "sh frame lmi".

As I'm not quite sure if LMI was disabled in newer releases, the only way

to know for sure is use each LMI type the the link

becomes active indicating that the right LMI is set.
