What are you looking to monitor/manage on yoru 3548XL? MRTG is always a popular choice, easy to intall and configure. If you have traps/syslog enabled you could script something to "watch" the syslog file. Lots of possibilities.
We use the new 3524-PWR-XL. These come with an inbuilt package called CIsco Visual Switch Manager which, from recollection is also provided with the 3548. It is accessed from a browser interface into the switch. It uses the enable password for authentication. It presents a fully graphical representation of the switch, allows you to change configs, get an inventory, do s/w updates and run utilisation reports (and other things). For a "freebie" it is one of the best I have come across. (shame its not available on the larger catalysts!)
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
