Is there any design limitation for number of OSPF areas per ABR ?

In CISCO Press book of OSPF Network design Solutions, it is written on page 173;

"Do not allow more than two areas per ABR, in addition to its connection to area 0. Otherwise, it will have to keep track of many link state databases"

Is this still a valid limitation for configuring OSPF on newer and faster platforms like CAT-6500s ?

There is no hard number. It depends on a lot of parameters such as the processor power, memory, number of routers in each area. I have seen customers

running way beyond the two areas stated in the above mentioned book.

No, it's not a valid number.... I'll back hritter up, and say there's no specific or hard number here. It's all going to depend on the type of area, the number of routes, etc.
