I am trying to determine if there is a way to cause a, ISDN dial backup circuit to timeout if there is no interesting traffic sent for a period of time. That is, have the ISDN dial backup activated when it sees interesting traffic, and then deactivated after the interesting traffic subsides.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The idle-timeout is designed for this purpose.

Thanks, Shanky.

Another thing to keep in mind is you may want to explicitly define what traffic is interesting. You don't want un-wanted traffic triggering the line or keeping it nailed up (routing updates, etc).

This doc shows some examples of idle timers and specifying interesting traffic.

Thank you, Daniel. I had considered creating the appropriate ACL to define interesting traffic and applying it to the dialer list. Thank you for the link.
