ISL-dot1Q encapsulation

Hi,

Currently we have 2 rotuers and 2 switches connected to each other, now I have to connect HP-switch to the rotuer_2, and for HP-switch I have to configure dot1Q (currently we are using ISL).

So in future what I want is router_1 connected to switch_1 and router_2 connected to HP-switch.

We are using HSRP between the routers. So if I change the encapsulation on router_2 to dot1Q do I have to change it on router_1 as well. Do I have to configure anything on the switch_1 so all the VLANs can talk to each other.

thanks

Re: ISL-dot1Q encapsulation

If your switches can trunk with ISL and dot1q you will not need to change router 1. If your switches only do one encapsulation at a time, you may have to change everything. I recommend keeping the same encapsulation type accross the network. try to keep a standard.

The trunk between switch 1 and the HP will need to become dot1q as the hp won't do ISL.

Be concious of the encapsulation capabilities of your equipment for interoperability.
