ISL or 802.1q for inter VLAN routing ?

Anyone please guide that if I want to perform the inter VLAN routing, is it true that I just have to trunk a port of the layer 3 switch by using ISL or 802.1q ?

Please help out if I have six 2950 switches at which each has a fiber backbone connected to the GBICs of a 4003, say I have 3 VLANs created across the switches, how do I trunk the VLANs in order to perform the inter VLAN routing ?

Please assist.

If you have several VLANs in the network, you will have indeed to trunk between the different devices and especially to the L3 device which will be responsible for the intervlan routing. Have a look to the following URL for more information:

2950's support only 802.1Q trunking

Hi there,

Because it a Cat4003, it doesn't support the SupIII (layer 3 supervisor), so you have to have a WS-X4232-L3 module.
