do people normally use crossover cables to uplink switches ?

Carl,

Generally a cross-over cable is used to connect the switches. Some witches like 3750's support auto MDIX(media interface xchange ) ports which automatically converts the straight through cable to cross-over cables. so if your switches have Auto MDIX ports you can use either a straight through cable or crose-over cable.
