L2 v. L3 EtherChannel

I am not having any problems configuring L2 or L3 EtherChannels, but I was wondering if anyone knew the advantages/disadvantages to using a layer 2 EtherChannel v. a layer 3 Etherchannel.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Re: L2 v. L3 EtherChannel

depending on the software and platform, load sharing accross the channel occurrs differently.

L2 balancing will put traffic on one connection based on the usuall, source, dest mac, and smarter switches may use source and dest IP and ports. Problem with this is most traffic is either sourced or destined for a default gateway, hence source and dest mac's and/or IP's are usually the same hence only one physical connection may be used and balancing will not occur very well.

L3 can be done on a packet by packet level irrespective of packet header, so if all your packets are roughly the same size , you will be able to almost balance.
