leased doesn't connect to internet

Hi

We have just had installed by our ISP a leased line router - Cisco 1601R.

Before I attempt (again - the first time failed) to set it up on our NT

network,I have conected it one win2k prof PC to make sure I can access the

internet from it.

The routers mask is 255.255.255.248

Its broadcast address is 194.73.217.199

The router address is 194.73.217.192

The routers LAN address 194.73.217.193

we also have 194-198 as useable addressed

Therefore I plugged the router directly into the PC wth a cross-over cable

with the following settings

NIC - 194.73.217.194

Mask 255.255.255.248

DG - None

I enabled IP forwarding in the Registry.

I expected to be able to access the internet by using LAN settings - auto

detect. But I can't browse or even ping another internet IP address.

I can ping 194.73.217.193 and 199 OK but not the others, although they can

be pinged from the outside world.

Unfortunatly the ISP is only interested in their side of the router and

can't offer any support to LAN side.

andy,

pls try giving the LAN address of the Router as the default gayeway. It should work. Also give an appropriate DNS entry to yr PC.

The DG idea makes sense, but how do I know the dns stuff the ISP hasn't given us any of that.

Do you ourusername.ispname.com type thing ?

Your ISP should supply you with the IP address of at least two DNS servers.

Check with your ISP.

As an aside, if you or anyone knows how to get this thing working properley, are you available on the phone - (we're paying of course) to get this working?

Based on time differences it suits us 'cause we down the server at night.

We are quite used to setting up ASDL and cable routers as they go on the same subnet, mask etc. but this is our first leased line and cisco router.

Normally we can make changes to the router ourselves but not this time.

You can use any DNS server as long as there's no firewall in fromt of it for testing.

I understand that the ISP can get to the router, but is the router set up correctly in terms of routes, etc. Do you have access to the 1600? Can you log in or does the ISP control the router exclusevly.

We don't have any access to the router the ISP controls it exclusively, I am more used to ADSL and cable where I have access to the router, so this is a new one one me. It has been suggested that the default getway might the problem and I have been sent an example set up. I am going to try this tommorrow (uk times). If I'm really stuck then the phone help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, just to let you know I am doing the setup now.

- Back to basics, if I attach a cross-over cable to the router from second(WAN) NIC, should I be able to ping it, because I get timed out error, but there is a little flash of the LAN activity button. I have set the WAN NIC to 194.73.217.194 and s/n 255.255.255.248 and G/W 194.73.217.192.

One thing is , the ISP agve us 3 IP address for the router, and I'm not sure what I should use.

194.73.217.192 LAN address

194.73.217.193 Router Address

194.73.217.199 Broadcast Address

Can you ping anything out on the Internet (not by name, but by ip)?

How do you have your PC conencted with the router to perform this test?

An update for anyone looking who can advise.

I can now ping the internet from the NIC conected to the router - 194.73.217.194

I can also ping 194.73.217.193 and 199 from the server but not 192 so the router address must be 193

I cannot ping the server's router NIC from any workstation or the router or the internet.

IP forwarding is enable on both server NIC's

A little nearer,

I can ping the server second NIC on 194.72.217.194

from win 2000 prof machines.

On win 98pc's, although I put 192.168.0.1 as the gateway, when I do winipcfg it says it 194.73.217.192 but that can't even be pinged from the server.

What should the Router setting (003) in the DHCP server scope on the NT server be ?
