License installation on VSS Cisco 4500X

Running 2 x Cisco 4500X as one VSS which has Universal IOS installed. Purchased two licenses from Cisco and used following insturction set:-

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps4324/white_paper_c11-685524.html

Step 1 – License installed on Primary and secondary is forced restarted with evaluation “entservices”.

Step 2 – Secondary reloads with entservices, whereas primary is still running IPBase, According to document this should force operational mode to RPR and following is the output I received.

*Dec 10 06:55:40.724: %SW_LEVEL-6-RESULT: Operational redundancy mode is UNKNOWN, due to software license-level mismatch at ACTIVE and STANDBY. Software Level on Active: ipbase; on Standby: entservices.

*Dec 10 06:56:00.819: %C4K_REDUNDANCY-6-MODE: ACTIVE supervisor initializing for sso mode

With reference to Cisco documentation, I was expecting mode to change to RPR but VSS renegotiated to SSO.

Step 3- Reloaded Primary switch and forced it to ROMON mode, Secondary takes over the VSS. And its running “entservices”.

Step 4- removed the boot level command, documentation states to change redundancy mode to SSO but our VSS mode wasn’t changed to RPR. However, I tried both, changed the mode to RPR manually, took the following command off

#no license boot level entservices

But Secondary switch keeps on running IPBase.

Any suggestions?

Issue is resolved, thought to share what problem I faced.

Above link doesn't cater 4500x even though it mentions series. It becomes more confusing as 4500X VSS runs on two chassis opposed to other Chassis with multiple Sup where you need one license per chassis.

In order to install license on VSS 4500X

  • Install license on primary
  • Force switch over to secondary and install license on second device.
    • I was getting License already installed message and thought One license will cover both chassis as VSS is one unit.
    • When I parsed the license file, I noted feature name is IPBase, where as I was upgrading from IPBase to Enterprise Services. Had to contact cisco to correct this.

ipbase1.0WS-C4500X-32XXXXCisco HQ2012-07-28T18:26:54XXX=PERMANENT11 ipbase 1.0 LONG NORMAL STANDALONE EXCL INFINITE_KEYS INFINITE_KEYS NEVER NEVER NiL SLM_CODE CL_ND_LCK NiL *1AJJ7XCRFMMEUFW400 NiL NiL NiL 5_MINS <UDI><PID>WS-C4500X-32</PID><SN>XXX</SN></UDI> </p></body>

I have 4500 with two chassis.  Bought two licenses for additional feature.  This is how I had to do it.

<-- copy the two files up using TFTP  --->

Hi   atrevido43,

Does this method requires downtime?? Thank you. After installing the license on the standby? what are the next steps? are we going to switchover to active again? thanks
