Line protocol up/down log on Catalyst 2950

What situation cause the following messages logged ?

Re: Line protocol up/down log on Catalyst 2950

Hi,

These messages are logged whenever a link state change is detected on an interface. Thus, the link drops because the interface detected that the link has gone down. This is a physical layer issue.

Some possible causes:

- connected workstation is rebooting

- NIC incompatibility between connecting NIC and switchport

- bad NIC on connecting device

- bad cable

- cable run is too long

- bad port on switch

Try moving the cable to a different port and see if the behavior is the same. If so, then it's probably not a bad switchport. Also try swapping cables, checking the connecting device NIC (may need a driver upgrade), trying a known good device on the switchport in question to ensure the integrity of the port.
