Here is the info from my "sh interface" command on our 3640. Why is my lost carrier and output errors exactly the same?

Ethernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is AmdP2, address is 0006.53ab.1380 (bia 0006.53ab.1380)

Internet address is xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/xx

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:02, output 00:00:00, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 132 drops

5 minute input rate 25000 bits/sec, 11 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 78000 bits/sec, 9 packets/sec

189671925 packets input, 1546234728 bytes, 0 no buffer

Received 31 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

187689383 packets output, 897185262 bytes, 0 underruns

23735 output errors, 0 collisions, 2 interface resets

0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred

23735 lost carrier, 0 no carrier

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

Paul

Can you post the same information for the port of the device this connects to?

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for responding. The router connects to port 3 of a 3512XL catalyst.

reliability 255/255, txload 3/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive not set

Full-duplex, Auto Speed (10), 100BaseTX/FX

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:25, output 00:00:00, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops

The two counters increment each time the condition is met. I would guess that each time the interface lost the carrier signal, you had a corresponding increment on the the output error counter. Lots of help right? I was hoping the interface on the connected device would provide some insight. The router interface reflects less traffic than the port on the switch, the interface counters have not been cleared, so we know the router was restarted at least once since the switch came up. Is this the first time you've noticed this? Will it repeat if you clear the counters for the ethernet interface? The router senses the loss of signal but not the switch. I did notice the switch port speed was set to auto. You may want to configure the speed and duplex manually and check the quality of the connecting cable carefully, especially the fit of the connector to the ethernet interface on the router.
