mac address port troubleshooting

On a CAT OS how can you view what port a particular IP address of a machine is plugged into. I did a sho arp and it only listed the router ip address and mac address. The IP address of the machine we are tyring to track down is routed but is connected local to the switch but the mac address does not appear. I tried to ping the IP address from the switch but still nothin. Any ideas?

Re: mac address port troubleshooting

see below

on the router that is on that subnet do a sh ip arp x.x.x.x it will show you a mac

router#sh ip arp

Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface

Internet 10.202.239.190 - 0003.fe25.3800 ARPA FastEthernet0/0

then on the switch do a sh cam 00-03-fe-25-38-00

it must be in that format for the mac address

then this will tell you what switch port is associated with that ip address/mac
