max lenght cable to connect switches

Hello:

I want to connect a switch 2950 to a switch 3548 (FastEthernet to FastEthernet) using UTP5 cable. The lenght of the cable is 50 meters (164 feet). The problem is that the link never gone up, I saw the amber light in both FE ports but in the console the FE is down. Obviusly I´m using a cross over cable.

I have changed the cable more than twice, the same cable works when I connect the switch to a hub.

Somebody know if there is max lenght for this kind of connection?

I apreciate your help.

Thank you.

Re: max lenght cable to connect switches

Your 50m cable should be fine. Max dist for CAT5 UTP is 100m. Which switch did you test with the hub? Did you test the other switch too? Have you tried different ports? How are the ports configured (access or trunk)? Did you hard code speed and duplex to 100/Full?

Re: max lenght cable to connect switches

Put both switches in AUTO/AUTO (speed/duplex), and give it a minute for the spanning tree convergence (or enable portfast - not usually recommended switch-switch).

Good Luck
