max-out of LAN

1. Is there a formula/computation for figuring out how many switches or max-backplane availability which can be used on the LAN behind a router?

2. I have sites using 2516 series routers with up to 6 cat2924, cat2820 and cat1924.

3. Other than waiting for customer complaints, how do I figure when to upgrade the router?

I don't know of a formula , the best way is just to keep an eye on the router and watch the CPU utilization along with the individual interface utilization to make sure the router isn't being overloaded .

1. Thanks Glen. There doesn't appear to be any "scientific" way to do it.....more of an art form/customer complaint issue than anything else.
