I have a 6509 switch running IOS 12.1.12E4 IOS. I already have 13 HSRP groups defined. When I try to add more and exceed 16 HSRP groups it tells me I have exceeded the maximum amount of HSRP groups. I thought that you can have more then 16 groups defined. I have one group number defined per interface VLAN. I am trying to add more VLAN's and cannot add the HSRP group numbers to them when I go over 16. Does anyone know if you can get more then 16 HSRP groups per switch defined?? Thanks...

Hi,
The 16 distinct HSRP group max is a limitation on the supervisor 2. However, you can re-use the same 16 group number multiple times. The actual number of HSRP groups you can have is 256.
The following is an FAQ on this limitation.
