Cisco Press's book "Top Down Network Design", page 103, has a table which recommends a maximum of 300 workstations in a broadcast domain (VLAN) if NetWare (IPX) only. That number drops down to 200 if there's a mix of protocols: for example, IPX and IP, or IPX and AppleTalk, or IPX and IP and AppleTalk, etc.
