MLS and VTP Domain interaction

I know that if my switch is configured as a VTP client or server that I need to use the "mls rp vtp domain" command on my router - but WHY do I need to do this?

How is the information gathered from the VTP domain used to make MLS run better on the router?

Re: MLS and VTP Domain interaction

MLS-RP to MLS-SE hello traffic does not cross the VTP layer 2 boundary. Therefore, if you do not specify what VTP domain the switch is in, the communication cannot be initiated. It does not make it run better exactly, it just stops the traffic spreading too far.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

I have just found an excellent link on Cisco's web site that backs up your explanation and provides additional details.

Funny how you only stumble onto these pages AFTER you finally ask others for help!
