Mobile IP - home network relative to home agent

Is there any requirement that a home network for mobile nodes must be directly attached to a home agent router? I have assumed that a mobile node on its home network can be reached from a home agent using routing as usual, when the home agent has no mobility binding. When a home agent establishes a mobility binding, the home agent intercepts packets destined for the home network, encapsulates them, and routes them to a care-of address based on the routing table. Is this correct? What configuration issues must be addressed when the home network is not directly attached to the home agent?
