What kind of specific monitoring are you looking for?

The best way is to write something custom as an addition to what you are currently using as your NMS. We use NetView (Openview) and I keep a list of sub interfaces I want to monitor in a file, and have a routine that polls them and sends an snmp trap to NetView (same box, snmptrap command) when a problem occurs. We just look for up or down but basically you could look for anything MIB related.

I suggest MRTG is Linux/NT based, stable, versatile and best of all.. FREE!!!

However is not very user friendly at the installation/configuration phase but is worth it. CACTI is another good option that u can check out.
